Very few words
Three or four large words at most, and not the same words as the title. The title and the thumbnail are read together, so let the thumbnail add something.
Strong contrast
Light against dark, a bright colour against a muted one. Contrast is what survives when the image is shrunk to the size of a postage stamp on a phone.
An honest promise
Show something that is really in the video. A thumbnail that overpromises loses the viewer within seconds of them clicking.
Getting a better result from the generator
The more specific your description, the more specific the design. "A video about cooking" gives the AI nothing to work with.
